DOCK REPAIR AND RETOPPING

SURFACES, FRAMING, SUPPORT BEAMS, CROSS BRACING, PILES, BOAT HOUSE POSTS.

Need help making repairs to your dock? Nobody wants to put themselves or others at risk with an insecure dock. With proactive maintenance and repair, you can extend the life of your dock and save yourself from a costly replacement before you have taken full advantage of the expected lifespan. The average lifespan of a wooden dock is around twenty years but this can be greatly reduced if your dock was not built properly or maintenance was not provided. Cleaning, sealing or painting and replacing pieces as they begin to rot and rust will preserve your investment for years to come.

Our construction is above and beyond standard construction practices. While most docks in our area are framed with very little bracing and joist 24” apart, we install cross bracing at every beam and frame our joists 16” on center for wood and 12” on center for composite and PVC topped decks.

When re-topping and rehabbing your dock, the age and condition of the entire dock must be taken into account. Generally, all your angled cross bracing needs to be replaced at the same time as your deck boards. We also perform a thorough inspection of your framing and piles. Anything that is not up to standard, is replaced or repaired. We use high quality pressure treated 2×6 boards for the decking installed by corrosion resistant 3” long screws.

When re-topping with a composite or PVC decking, generally the entire frame will need to be replaced to ensure an even tight surface for the decking. Composite and PVC decking will conform to the framing and any inconsistencies will show on the decking,

We also take into account additional dock features such as additional bracing for lifts, ladders adding cleats and bumper guards, lighting and electrical.

SIGNS YOUR DOCK IS IN NEED OF REPAIR
  • CRACKING. Any part of the wood, beams, or structure of the dock showing signs of cracking should be repaired. A minor crack may not cause an issue, but a large crack or widespread cracks can easily cause an accident.

  • ROTTING. Eventually, wood in contact with water will inevitably begin to rot. Unfortunately, it can easily spread to adjacent pieces of wood in the dock causing structural issues. Once you start to see signs of rot, it is important to replace the impacted wood to prevent it from compromising the rest of the dock.

  • RUST. Even galvanized steel will begin to rust after years of weathering. Over time, screws, brackets, supports and poles will begin to rust and require replacement. If you notice a significant part of the metal in your dock starting to rust, it may be a good time to repair these parts.

  • SUPPORTS. Any loose support pilings should be addressed quickly. If you feel any unsteadiness in your docks, you should plan to replace these support structures as soon as you are able.

  • UNEVEN SURFACES. Dips or sinking of one side of the dock or the other.

  • WOBBLING. Potentially due to rotting of bracing underneath.

We can install a few different types of decking from Wood to PVC or Composite. There are many options but most are personal preference.  Budget is a big factor, PVC and Composite often cost 3 times as much to install. Next would be use and look. Not all composite boards are rated or warranted for docks, our sales team can help you pick the correct types and brands. Some composite boards get extremely hot and should not be used if children, pets or bare feet will be frequently on the dock. Some lines of composite such as Moisture Shield Decking have a coating and a design to make them significantly cooler than their competitors. PVC decking made by Azek is also a good choice. Each option has different textures and colors available. As authorized installers of most brands, we would be happy to help you find the perfect decking for your project!

By the time the decking boards need to be replaced, the crossbracing in the water needs to be done at the same time. To do that efficiently we replace all the cross bracing while we have the deck top off.
